He is regarded as a gentle and calm God who helps mortals in their times of need. Homer, the Greek historian and poet, stated he lived on an island called Lemnos, which is sometimes claimed to be his own dream island. Icelus brought about the dreams of animals, and Phantasus brought about the dreams of the Inanimate things. Mainly Morpheus, the one who brought about the dreams of men. It is said that he lay on his couch, surrounded by his three sons. The inference is that once one goes to sleep, at least momentarily, one can forget one’s troubles and be at peace for the duration of the sleep). And through the cave, it was said that the river Lethe passed – The river of forgetfulness. He is said to have lived in a cave where poppy plants grew (which signified sleep and hallucinations or dreams). A place where the sun rays and the light of the moon could never reach nor a sound of any manner. He was said to live next to his brother Thanatos in the underworld. His mother was such a terror that even Zeus feared trespassing into her realm. I hope this symbol will be recognized and appreciated by all of you guys soon.He is often regarded as the one with no father or the fatherless son of Nyx, the Goddess of Night. Hypnos was associated with the river Lethē. Another thing is that this symbol looks like a question mark (?). The circle is actually the Lethēan water drop. The letter Z is actually a twig, probably a poplar or a cottonwood dipped in the river Lethē. The first description is a letter Z over the circle. It symbolizes that Hypnos put Zeus to sleep. So for the symbol, I made it according to his domain and small symbolic objects. They were called Oneiroi, or the dream manipulators. Going back, Hera offered one of the Graces to Hypnos, Pasithea, the goddess of relaxation and hallucinations. Remember the second time where Hera wanted to make Zeus fall asleep? Hypnos refused many times since he doesn’t like to get in touch with that god of all gods (OF COURSE, I DON’T EVEN WANT TO BE FRIED FROM ZEUS LIGHTNING BOLT), so hiding from his mother was his choice (the downside though). So technically, it was always Hera’s plan, so yeah. So again, Hypnos did it twice! Like really? To the Greek god of all gods? Well, yes! (With the help of the other gods, okay.) Hypnos didn’t do that for fun. (Well, another duh since Hera is his wife and Heracles is an illegitimate child. There was a story where Hypnos put Zeus to sleep just to let Hera do her “Heracles’s labor.” Of course Zeus got mad, duh? It was his son who had been punished by his wife. He made so many badass stories, and I believe that he is so awesome at making everyone sleepy as a part of his domain, sleep. Of course! He must rest too! Do you want to fly 24/7 just to put everyone to sleep? That’s a big responsibility, man! (□) So let’s give this sleepy god a silent applause (oh my god, is that possible?) Hypnos is also depicted as a sleeping god. I know it’s weird, but let’s say that he must fly with extra speed to drop anything into their sleep. Hypnos is depicted as a winged man with extra winglets near his temple. Sleep is like a temporary death, while death is a permanent sleep. Hypnos is the personification of sleep, while Thanatos is the personification of death-a peaceful death (a natural death, to be precise).įor me, these twins are pretty awesome since death and sleep are related to each other. Hypnos has a twin brother (yeah, just like Apollo and the lovely Artemis) named Thanatos. Hypnos (pronounced “Hy-pnos”) is one of the sons of Nyx, the personification of night, and Erebus, the personification of darkness. This is a hypothetical symbol for Hypnos, □ made by Restramvier.īefore I explain what the symbol means, let us first introduce the Sleepy God.
